Macrobiotics: Macrobiotics is the study of prolonging life with diet or other ingested substances. Macrobiotics comes from two words, macro, meaning great, and bios, meaning life. A practice of achieving healing and continual wellness through lifestyle, attitude and diet changes. Macrobiotics involves an awareness that we are connected to nature, and therefore, what is best for our physical bodies are those things from the earth.
The macrobiotic diet consists of low-fat, high complex-carbohydrates such as whole grains, vegetables, beans, fruit and fish. In addition, the macrobiotic diet may be tailored to each person's own needs and condition. Macrobiotics is based on oriental medicine and philosophy in addition to avoiding foods containing animal protiens. A macrobiotic diet relys mainly on foods consisting of whole grains.
Macrobiotics first began in Japan and was brought over to Europe where the widespread idea of macrobiotics began with the publishment of Christoph Wilhelm Hufeland of Germany's book "Macrobiotics, or the Art of Extending Ones Life" in 1796.
